Elaine Farndale, PhD, FCIPD, AHEA

 

International HRM Research, Teaching & Consultancy

 

Dr Elaine Farndale is Visiting Lecturer at the department of Labour Studies and Employment Relations at Penn State University in the USA, and (part-time) Assistant Professor in the Department of Human Resource Studies at Tilburg University in the Netherlands (www.uvt.nl/people/farndale).

 

 

Elaine is a graduate of the University of Hull (French and Modern Dutch Studies), Kingston University (Personnel Management) and Cranfield School of Management (PhD in HRM) in the UK. Elaine’s PhD explored the intra-organisational power of the human resources department in universities. She has worked previously as an HR specialist in HRM for several years.

 

In 1998, Elaine joined Cranfield School of Management as a Research Officer in the Research Centre for European Human Resource Management, headed by Professor Chris Brewster. Her main role was as researcher in the CRANET international comparative HRM research project.

 

In 2004, after completing her PhD she joined Erasmus University Rotterdam in the Netherlands where she was the lead researcher on the international HR Excellence project: The Global HR Research Alliance. This project was aimed at establishing the practices and mechanisms which generate/improve HRM effectiveness in multinational companies. The research project was sponsored by the Sanyo Corporation, and involved in-depth case-studies among selected multinational companies in Asia, USA, UK and mainland Europe, along with a global web-based survey.

 

In 2006, Elaine took up her position as Assistant Professor in Tilburg University, working with Professor Jaap Paauwe. Elaine is responsible for the International HRM module on the Masters in Human Resource Studies. She is also involved in numerous research projects, publications and executive development activities. Elaine was the organiser of the 2007 5th International Conference Dutch HRM Network held at Tilburg University (www.hrm-network.nl).

 

From 2004-2009, Elaine also worked in a research capacity with Professor Veronica Hope-Hailey and colleagues in the Change Management Consortium, based at Cass Business School in the UK (www.cass.city.ac.uk/cllc/cmc).

 

In 2009, Elaine joined the Labor Studies and Employee Relations group at Penn State University, and is working with Professor Paul Clark, responsible for running IHRM modules on both bachelor and professional Masters programmes.

 

Elaine’s specialist areas of interest and research include:

-          international and comparative HRM;

-          the power, professionalism and roles of the HR department;

-          HRM and firm performance;

-          change management and HRM;

-          eHRM and new HR delivery mechanisms;

-          and organisational justice, trust, commitment and engagement.

Elaine has presented numerous papers at international conferences and has published articles and chapters in both the practitioner and academic press. Elaine has also been a tutor on various Bachelors, Masters, MBA and executive training courses focusing primarily on International HRM.
